Diabetes–what is it?

NOVEMBER IS DIABETES AWARENESS MONTH!

Diabetes Mellitus—Sugar Diabetes—Sugars… No matter what you call it, it is a dangerous disease.  I call it the silent killer because it affects so many other organs in our bodies that we are just not aware. This disease has personally touched my family and claimed some of their lives as well.  You may also know or have someone who has diabetes whether its type I or II and you want to give them support in coping with this disease.  Many people have symptoms; however, they may not be aware of them and if they are aware they try to rationalize them away.

So, here a few questions I will answer:

  1. What are the symptoms?
  2. What organs are affected?
  3. What causes diabetes?

  • Excessive thirst and hunger
  • Blurred vision
  • Tiredness
  • Frequent urination
  • Lack of concentration

-eyes; blindness   –Heart disease    –Kidney Failure   –Loss of limb; due to the nervous system being affect

WHAT CAUSES DIABETES

What causes Diabetes type 2? Well, the pancreas produces insulin which is need to put blood sugar into our cells but when the pancreas is not producing the sugar builds up into our bloodstream. 

Here are just a few of the recent statistics on diabetes:

-Nearly 30 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes.

-Another 86 million Americans have pre-diabetes and are at risk for developing type 2 diabetes.

-The American Diabetes Association estimates that the total national cost of diagnosed diabetes in the United States is $245 billion.1

WHAT DO WE DO?

We are told to watch what we eat and like many of us we ignore it because we love our food and the cravings are terrible.
